Tea cosy by Kate Box

Wooly patchwork tea cosy by Kate Box
Other side of Kate Box's tea cosy
Wool blanket pieces dyed by Glen Wellstead for your own projects. £4.50 a bundle
I love this padded tea cosy with Liberty print lining by Kate Box. Kate also makes the popular wrist warmers, snoods, cushions and baby blankets for sale in Handmade Happiness.

I like to use these brightly coloured blanket pieces in my own work sometimes. They are tied up with sari silk and cost £4-50 for 8 to 10 pieces. Glen Wellstead makes rag rugs and often gives courses which are advertised in the shop.

New in Handmade Happiness

In the window this week
Applique cushions by Tanya Williamson
Fabric storage bags £12 by Gill Martin and mohair teddy by Lindsey Agostinelli
New cards delivered today by calligrapher Cathy Stables.  Chicken design shown in previous post.
In the top picture:  Kate Hackett's new snowdrop design jug and mug with Michelle Green's needlefelted bluetit.
Samantha Robertson's new design olive bowl; Ali Cooper's porcelain night light and Kate Hackett's heart decorations.
Rosamund Fowler's badger card; Justine Jenner's grey mug and Cathy Stables' chicken card.
Jenny Stacy bird brooch; Willemien Stevens card and Jacqui Watkins coaster.

It was a day of deliveries today. New cards from Willemien Stevens and Cathy Stables and two sacks of lovely fabrics that can be used at the new craft workshops.

I re-did the window and look forward to the sign writer coming next week to write the lettering above the length of the shop. Just got to decide whether the letters should be painted in red, grey or teal.  My favourite colour at the moment is that pale yellowy lime green if you know what I mean but I don't think that would show up enough. Friends and family are mostly voting for bright red.

Craft evenings

Stacks of colourful wool in London shop Loop
Yesterday I wrote about the new craft evenings run by Handmade Happiness starting on Thursday June 18th 7.30 to 9.00pm.  I have now booked as many Thursday evenings between now and Christmas at Winton House as were available. I have a good feeling about these craft sessions and I'm really looking forward to them. The response has been totally favourable so far.

So far the demand from customers has been to learn to knit, learn to crochet, learn to make a cushion etc. So these things will certainly be on offer. I also want to have a table or two where paints, pencils, paper, old magazines and print materials are available to use with no tuition, just to use and have fun with.

The cost per session will be £10.  I had hoped to offer a free taster session but materials still have to bought and the venue paid for so reluctantly I've agreed to a charge.

Please remember, if you want to comment below anything you write in the box will automatically delete when you press publish. Just write one word, press publish and once that word has been deleted it will print whatever you then write. Annoying but I don't know how to fix it. Just like my radiator which is leaking water into a big towel, distracting me from writing. Why do these things happen on a Saturday when offices are closed? I left my number on their 'emergency line' but I think it will be quicker to call in a plumber.

New! Craft evenings with Handmade Happiness

One of three dolls made recently by Jenny Stacy

Back view. Doll made by Jenny Stacy for Handmade Happiness

I often get asked if Handmade Happiness runs craft workshops.  We tried in the first year the shop opened but were hampered by lack of space.

Now I have booked Winton House, on Petersfield High Street with its big rooms and lots of tables and chairs.  The first session ta da! will be on Thursday June 18th 7.30pm to 9pm.

There will be five craft skills to try on different tables hosted by Handmade Happiness makers. The aim is a relaxed evening, practising and learning old techniques with gentle guidance when needed.

To find out more either visit the shop, email or ring me.  And I'll post more details in the next few days.

Cathy Stables and Jeanette Clarke

Beautiful calligraphy by Cathy Stables www.cathystables.com
Jeanette Clarke, artist. www.jeanetteclarke-art.co.uk
Local views by Jeanette Clarke. Cards available in Handmade Happiness.
Yesterday I visited these two artists on the Chichester Arts Trail. Click on any picture to go  straight to their websites. If fame were all about talent these two names would be famous.  I love the raised gold writing and perfect script of Cathy Stables work and I'm hoping to have her cards and some of her pictures in the shop in the near future.

Many years ago Jeanette Clarke and I spent our summers in Arundel exhibiting next to the castle entrance. It was like a commune of artists and makers all coming together each year to sell their work through August. I always admired Jeanette's work and I'm thrilled to be selling her cards in Handmade Happiness from Wednesday onwards.

Handmade Happiness shop tour - part one

New lettering will soon replace this panel and fill the three panels to the left as well
Stepping inside Handmade Happiness. Art by Christine Burgess, cushions by Tanya Williamson
Wood bread boards, serving boards, chopping boards.
Kate Hackett's colourful ceramics, with items by Justine Jenner above and another of Christine Burgess's paintings.
Jill Poole's delicate bird paintings, Ali Cooper's ceramics and Penny Seume's cushions and lampshades.
Pam Dew's glorious quilt in Handmade Happiness
Thanks to a recent customer's comments I have been thinking a lot about 'branding' this week. Making Handmade Happiness into a more publicised 'brand'.

First step is to sort out the shop's 'street presence.' I've contacted a sign writer to write the name above both sides of the shop, not just the right side where it's written now.  I think I'll re-do the A board sign on the pavement myself and I'm wondering about a 'yarn bombing' look from the flag pole to attract attention.

People are always pointing out my lack of instagram, Facebook, Twitter, website.

I feel I've got to master those things as everyone else seems to be online bigtime and I've only got this little blog (that it's really difficult, if not impossible, to post a comment on.)
So branding online - yes, I will turn my attention to that as well.

A friend says think of a colour you love and have everything to do with Handmade Happiness in that colour. But how can I pick just one colour?

To be continued...

Just thinking

Wood buttons I used to paint.
A young woman from Finland visited the shop yesterday. She said the government there has set up a large craft school for anyone who wants to learn traditional crafts. Woodwork, weaving, sewing, knitting. You can spend as long as you like doing the workshops you choose, a week, even a year very cheaply as it's government subsidised.

I love this idea.
Then she told me about the long dark winters they experience north of the Arctic Circle in Lapland. Eight months of cold and snow and just four short months of summer and I realised that concentrating on learning and practising a craft was not just a fun way of spending your time but an essential art therapy to counteract the dark and cold outside.

You don't have to live with extreme weather conditions to appreciate the beneficial effects of making something or painting a picture. It does everybody good.

Whenever I travel back from London in the rush hour and can see the effects of a stressful life style I find myself thinking about play activities for adults in the shop. Just the chance to pick up craft materials and make something or just doodle in a totally unpressurised, unstructured way. To use that part of the creative brain that often gets ignored as we strive to make more money or climb the work ladder.

Most people on trains in the rush hour are staring at a screen, watching a film, playing a game, reading a book. The information is coming to them. How would they feel if they drew a picture instead or wrote their thoughts down in a notebook or knitted themselves some socks. Could they even do that in a cramped environment?

Would there be any takers for a free weekday evening session where people could just enjoy the simple pleasure of making their mark with pencil and paints, and scissors and glue?

Cushions by Tanya Williamson

Bassett dog cushion and fish cushion by Tanya Williamson. Knitted bunny by Sue Inglis.
Golden retriever cushion by Tanya Williamson with teapot by Justine Jenner
Handmade Happiness has lots more cushions after a visit from Tanya Williamson. These clever applique cushions are always popular and make a great present.

I am thinking wedding thoughts again. My youngest has just announced her engagement. Congratulations to Sophie and Owain! Her taste is different to her sister's so decorations will be different.

I'd also like to shed a few pounds before those wedding photos! A daily walk round the lake is helping as is an awareness of what I'm eating. A friend pointed out a very good article about weight loss saying basically we all know the theory. You just have to decide to lose a pound a week and when that doesn't happen try much harder the next week until you reach your goal. No fads, no do's and don'ts just do it! Easy eh?!

First doll for baby

Doll made by Jenny Stacy for her grandaughter
I gave Juno this doll yesterday and she promptly threw it over her shoulder. Throwing is the new game. She hasn't time for her doll right now. But I like to think she'll enjoy discovering it later.

Her mother liked smoothing a piece of satin so this doll has a satin ribbon loop. There are pompoms to twiddle and velvet armbands to feel. The doll has a hand-knitted top with suffolk puff sewn on for more texture and her skirt is made of soft brushed cotton. I enjoyed making her and I might make a few more 'comfort dolls' for the shop.

It's my birthday....!

Aren't I lucky to have been born in April? The sun is shining, the blossom is on the trees and the cygnets on the lake are losing their grey plumage and becoming beautiful swans.
I took these pictures when out on a walk on Monday.

I have been looking at old diaries and thinking about how I nearly moved to Horsham or Emsworth. I put offers on houses in both those places but fate eventually brought me here to Petersfield. And I love this place.

I am also very lucky to have found my shop when I did. It became available just when I was told that the shop I worked for, Tricot Too in Dragon Street was closing.

My daughters and baby grandaughter are visiting the shop today. I am in the middle of making a big rag doll for baby Juno. It won't be finished today but when it is I'll make sure I show you pictures of it on this blog.

Justine Jenner, ceramics

Love the marks of the potter's hands on these jugs and mugs by Justine Jenner
Justine Jenner's jugs and mugs on display with paintings by Christine Burgess and engraved cutlery by Kirstie Turner

Local potter, Justine Jenner makes teapots, cups and saucers, mugs, jugs and plates all in shades of white and grey. The glazes are subtly speckled. The design is strong, simple, good taste.

I try not to buy from Handmade Happiness, wanting the maximum range to be seen by the customer, but I have bought two of Justine's mugs (£15 each) and (for Christmas presents) two of Christine Burgess' paintings. I can imagine being unable to resist one of these jugs (£18) for long.

Yesterday a customer 'fell in love with' two of Christine Burgess' paintings and unable to decide between them she bought both.  That was in the morning before the film crew for 'The Best British Potter' arrived.

This new programme, scheduled to go out in the autumn, is being made by the team responsible for The Great British Bake Off and The Great British Sewing Bee.

One of the contestants, who lives in London, is an interior designer. Her hobby is making pots for friends and family. She was filmed in Tara's shop next door talking fabrics. I can't wait to see the programme.

As the crew were packing up I approached them with a Handmade Happiness business card. If the programme has a second series I think they may well be interested in some of the potters whose work can be seen in Handmade Happiness!

Back to my roots

When you're creative you make rather than buy. A friend is re-upholstering her settee and I know the result will look professional. My daughter has just made cushions to sit in some old dining chairs. Another friend who visits the shop regularly often says,'When I see something I really like, I tell myself, if I really want it I'll make it.' Know the feeling?

I've just finished reading Patrick Gale's new book,'A Place called Winter'.  It's about some of those hardy souls that left Britain to break new ground (literally) in Canada. All their powers of ingenuity and creativity were put to the test as they built their own homes, grew crops and faced the challenge of cooking something edible with very few ingredients. You traded with your neighbours. People helped one another. You were a long way from a shop and when you did make the journey to the nearest town you bought the very basics needed for survival. You toiled all day in the field and collapsed exhausted into bed at night.

We've come a long way since then. And so much is done for us by other people. But I think many of us feel a pull to be more self-reliant. To grow food, to make things instead of buy them. To try to make our lives more simple and satisfying.

Politicians don't seem to understand that. To win my vote they would have to operate the KISS principal - Keep It Simple Stupid !! Your past achievements don't impress me and your fancy words don't either. Just lay out an achievable plan - not too idealistic - that we can all understand and believe is possible. And don't forget your pioneer roots.

Happy Easter!

Handmade Happiness - part of the Easter window
The knitting is growing...
Happy Easter holidays! The leaves on the twisted hazel in the window are unfurling and the daffodil buds are opening. Sue Inglis, who makes the knitted decorations seen above has made some Easter gift wrap. Also pictured are one of Kate Hackett's colourful plates, a duck cushion by Tanya Williamson and Christine Burgess' atmospheric painting.

When in London I did actually buy some Rowan's denim yarn I spoke about earlier. The yarn is designed to fade, like denim, when washed. The two knitted sections on the left are knitted with this yarn. Maybe the navy is too much of a contrast. But once this thin bit of knitting becomes a throw(!) and the navy pieces are dotted around I think it will look ok.

I intended to take pictures when in London but stupidly left my camera battery charging at home. Then worried all day that the house might catch fire. Such is my vague grasp of the risks of modern technology.

Handmade Happiness was very busy yesterday and I expect it will be today. Younger daughter is staying tonight so I must go and make up a bed for her before going to the shop.

Knitting blues

Playing with stitches, knitting and crochet but always blue
Thinking about denim and all the shades of navy through to palest blue gives a discipline to this wild type of knitting. It's never boring because you can experiment with new stitches or different textures. It will hopefully still look ok because it's all blue. As usual my photograph is lighter than the actual knitting.

I collect yarn usually of the 'odd ball' type in wire bins in shops which are half price. I've got a tremendous variety. Ideally I'd buy that denim yarn from Rowan that is designed to fade when washed but I'm not sure they manufacture it any more. Today I'm meeting my daughter and grandaughter in London for a wander round the shops and I hope to pick up some more yarn from John Lewis. And I'll also take some pictures for this blog.

When I look at this picture the dropped stitch glares out as if it had flashing lights around it. I'll stitch it in later so hopefully it won't show!

London Sunday

Chocolate strawberries in Selfridges. £10 a cone.
At the Country Living show. The woman is giving a talk on keeping chickens.
The Heals stand - starting a trend for bright cushions?
Beautiful fabric through the window at Annie's costume company.
In Loop. I love these little knitted guys. Think Laura Long designed them.
Inside Loop

Julie Arkell's quirky doll. I bought one of her books at Loop.
Glad I visited the Country Living show yesterday. A proper day out.

So refreshing to tramp the streets of London again and get ideas and see fresh sights and talk to interesting strangers!

Gertie Strahl makes delicate patchwork, crochet and embroidered pieces using ancient fine fabrics. www.treutmade.com  Her stand at Country Living stood out for me. She'd made everything herself. I can imagine her work in Libertys.

I was also smitten with the feminine greetings cards by www.somethingforthegirls.com  My daughter has given me these cards - delicate kitten heeled shoes embellished with dots of glitter or ballet shoes and tutus lightly glittered. So pretty.

I spoke with two companies whose work I'd like to stock in Handmade Happiness. More of these later!

In Camden Passage lives Loop, the brilliant knitting shop owned by book author Susan Cropper.  Julie Arkell gives workshops at Loop. I've long wanted to have a go at papier mache, with jewellery in mind. Yesterday I couldn't resist buying one of Julie's books picturing lots of her quirky animal figures.

Thought for the day: Using really fine yarn to knit or crochet with makes items look more appealing, more clever and more expensive!!

Seascapes and lino cuts by Christine Burgess

'Breeze' by Christine Burgess. Love this painting.
'Dunes' by Christine Burgess
'Wild Woods II' by Christine Burgess
Lino cut card by Christine Burgess
'Dandelion' lino cut card by Christine Burgess
When I started Handmade Happiness I already had a nucleus of makers, old friends, whose work I wanted to sell. One of these is Christine Burgess. I have known her for many years and Christine constantly impresses me. Everything she does turns out well.

She ran a successful childrens' craft shop called Crocodile Crafts in Chichester. She turned her attention to wood turning and produced the most beautiful bread boards and wood serving boards. Her lino cuts are sophisticated and popular and now, her amazing acrylic paintings usually featuring the sea and cloudy skies just blow me away.

These three paintings pictured above are her latest work, delivered to Handmade Happiness this week. Now is the time to invest in Christine Burgess. I have a strong feeling her work will be very collectable in the near future.
